Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction
Teeth may need to be removed for a variety of reasons, but the most common one is that the tooth has experienced too much damage and is beyond saving. This is usually due to long-term decay from poor oral hygiene, but it can also occur following a severe oral injury that left the tooth cracked or fractured. If the crack extends below the gum line, it’s possible that the root portion has been damaged beyond repair and therefore must be extracted. Severe gum disease can also result in tooth loss.
How Tooth Extractions Work
If a tooth is easily visible within the mouth, our dentists will begin by numbing the treatment area with local anesthetic, then start gently rocking the tooth back and forth using a dental elevator. This will remove it from the periodontal ligament and make it easier to take out using a pair of dental forceps. Upon removing the tooth, we’ll ask you to bite down on a gauze pad so that a blood clot can properly form.
