Scaling & Root Planing

Animated scaling and root planing periodontal therapy

Scaling and root planing is a dedicated deep cleaning treatment that is often performed over the course of multiple dental appointments. During the scaling phase, small amounts of plaque are removed from the areas above and below gum tissue, which is why at-home care or traditional cleanings are insufficient against advanced gum disease. Root planing involves smoothing out the tooth roots, which reduces the risk of gum disease coming back, stops gum recession, and promotes healing of the gum tissue.

Subgingival Irrigation with Iodine or Arestin® Antibiotic Therapy

Animated Arestin antibiotic therapy process

As part of your gum therapy, we provide below-the-gumline irrigation with Iodine or place Arestin antibiotic as therapy as well. Iodine is a long-used anti-infective agent while Arestin is a localized version of an antibiotic designed to sit within the deep pockets of your gums that have formed as a result of your gum disease. Slowly over time, the medication releases antibiotics throughout your gum tissue and dissolves, promoting additional healing. As part of your follow-up visit, we’ll make sure that the medication is working as intended or change your treatment plan if needed.
