Setting Your Youngest Up
for Oral Health Success
Dentistry is essential regardless of your age, but it’s important to note that children deserve a special level of attention because that is when prevention is most critical for longterm oral health. There is universal agreement that if your child can retain his/her deciduous (baby) teeth, utilize optimal preventive services such as sealants and obtain appropriate orthodontic care, they will end up experiencing far less dental disease, pain, and costs as adults.
We love it when our newly-minted parents bring their 1-year-olds into the office with them for their own cleaning so that we can involve them in Mom/Dad’s cleaning visit – sitting on Mom’s lap, for example, spraying water into their parent’s mouth or helping us count teeth. In fact, many times we ask the child how many teeth he/she has in their mouths and the child just opens wide without any anxiety. It’s a great way to start being a dental patient --- no anxiety, no pain, no fear.

Dental Checkups & Cleanings for Kids
During your child’s initial exam, we want to do everything we can to make them feel comfortable and right at home. For example, their first visit is more geared towards educating them as well as parents about at-home oral care. As they get used to visiting our office, we’ll begin performing more comprehensive exams and cleanings to keep their teeth and gums healthy. Children should be visiting our office once their first tooth erupts or within six months of their first birthday.
Since your child is still perfecting their oral care, we want to help protect their teeth however possible. Dental sealants are a quick, affordable, and completely painless treatment available our office that works to seal teeth away from plaque and bacteria. Generally, we place these composite resin sealants onto molars and premolars, which are extremely vulnerable to cavities due to their deep pits and grooves. In a single appointment, we can seal these teeth and keep them protected for up to 10 years!
Your child’s teeth are not as strong or developed as their permanent teeth will be, which is why it’s so crucial to make sure their fluoride intake is sufficient. This is done by teaching them how to brush and floss at home as well as through dedicated cleanings and fluoride treatments at our office. Fluoride is a key mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and reduces the risk of cavity development in teeth. Once applied, your child can continue learning their oral care with confidence!
While dental fillings are often made from silver amalgam material, it’s not necessary to use this material just to repair teeth. Today, many dentists make use of composite resin, which is not only durable, but can be shaded to match existing teeth exactly. No longer do you have to worry about silver material shining in your mouth when you smile. With proper care, tooth-colored fillings can last at least 10 years.
